The intersection of these bands defines the grid zone designation (GZD). With MGRS, the world is divided into 60 longitudinal bands numbered 1 through 60, with each longitudinal band having a width of 6 degrees, and 20 latitude bands lettered C to X (omitting I and O to avoid confusion with numbers), with each latitudinal band normally having a height of 8 degrees.
